a new beater in town

around a month ago, i purchased a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2. if you thought that the Z3 was a horrific financial decision, just wait until you get a load of this.

original condition

the car came with a host of different issues on purchase.

  • misfire on cylinder whatever.
  • rear right O2 sensor had its wire devoured by the driveshaft.
  • a bunch of other sensors also were curiously showing 0 activity
  • front brakes are on the out
  • front shocks are on the out
  • left low beam headlight was out
  • no bumper lol
  • ac doesn’t blow, but is cold
  • couldn’t really turn signal properly
  • trunk door doesn’t exactly enjoy opening

solutions

a lot of the issues have been fixed in the last month.

misfire

the misfire was the main time-sensitive problem, in that it would probably be inadvisable to drive for long distances while the car was missing so hard. it was causing a flashing CEL, meaning enough unburned fuel must have gone through to start registering damage to the cats. after (improperly) doing the spark plugs to little avail, and having a shop do a compression test, we generally isolated the issue to either the ignition coils/wires or the fuel injectors.

the previous owner decided to run the AutoZone special spark plug wires, meaning those were a highly likely candidate for causing a miss. and lo and behold, when we were unplugging the wires, one of the connectors had developed a crack and stayed inside the ignition coil. upon replacement of the coils and wires, we were fortunately firing on all cylinders again. otherwise, i would have been livid.

the other miscellaneous sensors were not the main cause of the misfire, but did exacerbate the symptoms. the reason a bunch of sensors were dead was because whatever took out the bottom right O2 sensor also got the attached fuse, which killed everything else. very simple fix that kinda freaked me out.

the front left O2 sensor was installed with the care and delicacy of a sledgehammer. i’m not sure how they managed to completely mutilate the male-end connector (the one that’s extremely hard to replace!!!), but i ended up making it much worse by deciding to splice a new set of wires on instead of re-pinning the original. i’m not gonna lie, i just had my friend do it and made him dinner as repayment. but it runs pretty well now!

other misc improvements

also purchased a new bumper (and kinda busted my finger trying to get it on) and replaced the tail lights, which has significantly improved the cosmetic state of the car. i will not talk about the lack of windshield washer fluid, as that seems like an issue for another time

tl;dr

after buying a pretty rough car and owning it for a month and putting quite a bit of money into it, it is now slightly better! granted, the suspension and brakes are still pending (brakes happening this weekend, suspension whenever i get my psc bonus). there is also still some wiring with the knock sensor that MIGHT have gotten slightly pinched when we did the ignition coils.

but the car runs now. i wouldn’t say well just yet, but it is in a significantly better shape than when i bought it. take that, haters.
